A Place Where Instruction Really Counts

What is Vector Green Reading

The Vector system was developed in the 1970’s by Horace Templeton, a retired Air Force test pilot who realized that his putting woes could be overcome by the application of a little math and physics. Templeton did the science for you and so you can focus on making the putts.

If you haven’t heard of Vector Green Reading before, we are not surprised. Templeton’s work was highly technical and his book, “Vector Putting – The art and science of reading greens and computing break”, published in 1984, was largely forgotten until a couple of enterprising PGA professionals, Mike Schy and David Balbi rediscovered it in 2011. Schy and Balbi licensed the rights to the work from the Templeton family and developed a simple, quick and reliable system of reading greens.

Who is Vector Green Reading

Here at The Ridge we have worked closely with Mike Schy for over 10 years and know him to be a great golf professional and a talented teacher and so we have no hesitation in endorsing the Vector Green Reading system.

Practice Facility

Be sure to visit our practice facility at the Ridge Golf Club and Events Center just before you play and consider allowing a little extra time to warm up before you take on the challenges that our designer Robert Trent Jones Jr. has created.

You'll want your drives to be strong and accurate. Lots of uphill fairways will challenge you on the tee box. So head first to our driving range; start with some wedge shots and work your way up through the clubs in your bag for about 15 minutes.

We have 25 stations for golfers on our driving range that includes target greens to improve your aim.Finish your range session by “playing” the first few holes by imagining the first fairway and hitting a drive; then pretend you're hitting your approach shot to the first green, and so forth.

You'll want to work on chipping and your sand shots at our separate green set aside for short-game work.

We also have a putting surface where you can get the feel of our greens before your arrive at your very first hole.

Driving Range

The driving range at The Ridge is a great place to practice or warm up before your round. We offer 25 station and 5 target greens from 75 to 275 yards.

The range is open from sunrise to 1 hour before sunset. We offer hitting mats on Monday to Wednesday and grass tee Thursday to Sunday (weather permitting). We offer a sand bunker to practice your sand game and we allow chipping on any of our practice greens.

Range balls cost $5 for half a basket of about 50 balls and $8 for a full basket of 100 balls and $11 for 150 balls. We also offer an annual range pass for unlimited use of the range for $499.99. A range pass is the ideal purchase for beginning golfers who want to practice regularly.

Putting Greens

The Ridge offers two putting greens to practice on. They are very similar to the greens on the course to give you a great practice or warm up session before you play. Their undulations and speed will give you a realistic feel of the greens on the course. We allow chipping on our greens, just repair any ball marks please.

The greens are creeping bent grass surface, one of the best putting surfaces in golf. They are smooth and true and will challenge any putting stroke.

The putting greens are open daily from sunrise to sunset and there is no charge to use our putting greens.
